Meet the 2008 Alumni Award Winners

Three American University alumni were honored with awards on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at the Port & Politics Reception during Alumni Weekend in the American University Museum, Katzen Arts Center.

Nominations for 2009 Alumni Awards are now being accepted through Friday, May 15.

American University Rising Star Award

The Rising Star Award recognizes alumni who have received their undergraduate degree within the past 10 years and who are already making significant contributions to society through professional or philanthropic work.

Carmen K. Iezzi, 2008 Rising Star Award WinnerCarmen K. Iezzi, SIS/BA'00, SIS/MA'01
Carmen K. Iezzi is the executive director of the Fair Trade Federation, which represents more than 270 fair trade businesses in North America. Iezzi serves as the vice chair of the board of directors for Ten Thousand Villages of Alexandria in Virginia and chairs the Millennium Development Goals Task Force for the UN Association of the National Capital Area. She also writes and conducts research on a freelance basis. Before joining the Fair Trade Federation, she worked as director of alumni relations in AU’s School of International Service and as the assistant director of education with the Atlantic Council of the United States, where she worked to infuse transatlantic content into hundreds of American colleges and universities. Iezzi currently serves on the AU Honors Alumni Board and offers career counseling to SIS students.

American University Alumni Achievement Award

The Alumni Achievement Award recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves through their professional accomplishments.

Jim McGovern, 2008 Alumni Achievement Award WinnerJim McGovern, CAS/BA'81, SPA/MPA'84
Jim McGovern is serving his sixth term as U.S. representative for the state of Massachusetts’ 3rd Congressional District. Elected by his New England colleagues to the House Democratic Leadership team as Regional Whip, he also serves as vice chair of the House Rules Committee, which sets the terms for debate and amendments on most legislation, and is a member of the House Budget Committee. Prior to his election to Congress, he served as a senior aide to the late U.S. Representative John Joseph Moakley (D-Massachusetts) for 14 years. McGovern has earned a reputation in Congress as a champion of human rights, ending hunger, higher education, and the environment. In his spare time, he serves as an alumni advisor to AU’s Kennedy Political Union.

American University Alumni Recognition Award

The Alumni Recognition Award recognizes alumni who inspire the world around them through service to the community or a philanthropic mission.

Ronald Nissenbaum, Alumni Recognition Award WinnerRonald "Boots" Nissenbaum, KSB/BS'58
Ronald “Boots” Nissenbaum has been one of AU’s greatest supporters for the past 40 years, both on and off campus. A former student member of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, Nissenbaum continues to support the group through the organizing of alumni gatherings and stewardship of the Zeta Beta Tau/Donald Brenner Scholarship, given to students on the basis of need, with a preference for the children or grandchildren of ZBT alumni. As a huge supporter of AU Athletics, he has worked tirelessly to help the men’s basketball team receive the support and recognition it deserves. Away from campus, Nissenbaum served as president of AU’s Philadelphia alumni chapter from 2002 to 2006. He resides in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and is the CEO and owner of Humphry’s and Cover Sports USA, the leading manufacturer of industrial tarps and sports fabric covers in the United States.
